Use Your FPL Chips Before GW19: They All Reset in GW20
Don't let your first-half chips go to waste.
Important: All first-half chips expire after the Gameweek 19 deadline. In GW20, you'll receive a completely fresh set of chips for the second half of the season.
Why This Matters
In 2025/26, FPL gives you two complete sets of chips - one for each half of the season. Unlike previous seasons where some chips rolled over, this season's first-half chips are use them or lose them.
If you still have unused chips heading into GW19, you need to act now. There's no benefit to hoarding them - they won't carry over, and you'll simply miss out on potential points.
Check Which Chips You Have Left
Head to the FPL website or app and check your chip status. You should see which of these four chips you still have available:
- Wildcard - Unlimited free transfers, permanent changes
- Free Hit - Unlimited transfers for one week only, squad reverts
- Bench Boost - All 15 players' points count
- Triple Captain - Captain scores 3x instead of 2x
How to Use Your Remaining Chips
If you have all 4 chips left
You need to use one chip per gameweek from GW16-GW19. Consider using your Wildcard in GW16 to set up your squad, then deploy the other three chips across GW17-GW19 based on fixtures and double gameweeks.
If you have 2-3 chips left
You have more flexibility. Look at the fixture schedule and identify the best opportunities. Bench Boost works best when all 15 players have good fixtures. Triple Captain is ideal for premium assets with favourable matchups.
If you have 1 chip left
Don't overthink it - just use it! Even a sub-optimal chip use is better than letting it expire. Any points gained are points you wouldn't have otherwise.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting the deadline - Set a reminder for the GW19 deadline
- Waiting for the "perfect" gameweek - A good chip use now beats a wasted chip later
- Stacking chips in GW19 - You can only use one chip per gameweek, so don't leave multiple chips until the last week
- Ignoring your bench for Bench Boost - Make sure all 15 players are likely to start
Key Dates to Remember
- GW16: Everyone receives 5 free transfers (AFCON preparation)
- GW19 deadline: Last chance to use first-half chips
- GW20: Fresh set of all four chips becomes available
FAQs
- When do first-half FPL chips expire?
- First-half chips must be used by the Gameweek 19 deadline. Any unused chips from the first half of the season will NOT carry over - they simply disappear and you receive a fresh set in GW20.
- What chips reset in Gameweek 20?
- All four chips reset: Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, and Triple Captain. You'll receive one of each for the second half of the season, regardless of whether you used your first-half chips.
- Can I save my first-half chips for later?
- No. First-half chips cannot be saved or transferred to the second half. If you don't use them by the GW19 deadline, you lose them permanently. This is why planning your chip usage is crucial.
- What's the best order to use my remaining chips?
- It depends on your situation, but generally: use Wildcard first to reshape your squad, then Bench Boost when you have 15 strong starters, Triple Captain on your best captain option, and Free Hit for any blank or difficult gameweek.
