When Do FPL Chips Reset? Chips Explained for 2026/27
Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost & Triple Captain — rules, reset dates and timing strategy. Updated for the 2026/27 season; final rules confirmed when the game launches.
Chips are one-off boosts that change how your team scores or how you can transfer for a Gameweek. You can only use one chip per Gameweek. Under the two-set system introduced in 2025/26 you get two sets of chips — one set in each half of the season — and first-half chips must be used by the mid-season reset deadline (GW19 in 2025/26). The same system is expected for 2026/27; this guide will be updated the day the official rules are published.
When do FPL chips reset?
Under the two-set system, all four FPL chips reset at the GW19 deadline — in 2026/27 that is 13:30 UTC on Saturday 2 January 2027. Every manager receives a fresh Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain for the second half of the season, available from GW20 onwards (deadline 18:30 UTC on Wednesday 6 January 2027). Any first-half chip not used by the reset deadline is lost — chips do not carry over.
The confirmed 2026/27 chip windows:
| Chip | First-half window | Resets | Second-half window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wildcard | GW2 → GW19 deadline | GW20 | GW20 → end of season |
| Free Hit | GW2 → GW19 deadline | GW20 | GW21 → end of season* |
| Bench Boost | GW1 → GW19 deadline | GW20 | GW20 → end of season |
| Triple Captain | GW1 → GW19 deadline | GW20 | GW20 → end of season |
*Because your squad reverts after a Free Hit, you can't play Free Hit in both GW19 and GW20 consecutively — the earliest the second-half Free Hit is realistically used is GW21.
Wildcard
Make unlimited transfers for free and lock in the changes after the deadline. You have one Wildcard per half-season.
- Best for full squad resets, injuries, or fixture swings.
- Irreversible once confirmed. (Can’t be cancelled.)
- Keeps banked transfers: saved FTs aren’t lost when you Wildcard.
- Popular patterns: early correction; or pre-Double GW to set up a Bench Boost the week after.
Free Hit
Make unlimited transfers for this Gameweek only. After the deadline, your squad automatically reverts to its previous state. You get one Free Hit per half-season.
- Banked transfers carry through — you keep any saved FTs when you Free Hit.
- Strong in Blank Gameweeks or to attack short-term fixture runs.
- Cannot be used in GW1, and because your team must revert, you can’t play it in both GW19 and GW20.
- Irreversible once confirmed. (Can’t be cancelled after you hit confirm.)
Bench Boost
Your bench points count to your total for that week. You have one Bench Boost per half-season.
- Use when all 15 players are likely starters.
- Often paired with a Wildcard the week before a Double Gameweek.
- Can be switched off anytime before the deadline.
Triple Captain
Your captain scores triple instead of double. You have one Triple Captain per half-season.
- Target a premium attacker in a Double GW or an elite single with big upside.
- Can be switched off anytime before the deadline.
Key 2026/27 Notes
- Two sets of chips expected: one per half. First-half chips must be used by the mid-season reset deadline and don’t roll into the second half.
- Free Hit keeps banked transfers. Your squad reverts after the deadline; your saved FTs remain.
- Post-World Cup season: the campaign starts a week later than usual (GW1 deadline Friday 21 August 2026) and there’s no AFCON break this season — see all the key dates for 2026/27.
- One chip per Gameweek; chips can’t be combined.
- Rules confirmed at launch: this guide is updated as soon as the 2026/27 game goes live with the official chip rules.
FAQs
- When do FPL chips reset?
- Under the two-set system, all four FPL chips (Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, Triple Captain) reset at the GW19 deadline. In 2026/27 that deadline is 13:30 UTC on Saturday 2 January 2027, with the fresh set available from GW20 (6 January 2027). Any first-half chip not used by the reset deadline is lost — they do not carry over.
- Will FPL chips reset in 2026/27?
- Yes. The 2026/27 rules are confirmed and the two-set system continues: a full set of all four chips (Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, Triple Captain) in each half of the season. The first-half set expires at the GW19 deadline and a fresh set unlocks for GW20 onwards. There are no new chip types for 2026/27.
- How many times can I use each chip?
- Under the two-set system you get two of every chip per season: one Wildcard, one Free Hit, one Bench Boost and one Triple Captain in each half of the campaign. First-half chips must be used by the mid-season reset deadline.
- Do banked transfers carry through a Free Hit?
- Yes. Since 2025/26, when you play Free Hit you KEEP your banked transfers. Your squad reverts after the deadline, but your saved free transfers remain.
- Can I play two chips in the same Gameweek?
- No. You can only activate one chip per Gameweek.
- Can I cancel a chip after activating it?
- Bench Boost and Triple Captain can be cancelled any time before the deadline. Wildcard and Free Hit cannot be cancelled once you’ve confirmed them.
